Vintage shop moshing with @ellie_made today. My new hat gives me great joy - made from one hank of @debonnaireyarns - and I need to get you some good photos! Amazing coat from @ripitupvintage πŸ‘
Tenement tiles galore in an open close. Glasgow Southside.
Today's #yarnlovechallenge is all about yarn. I don't have a favourite yarn but I have a favourite KIND of yarn: yarn that feels sheepy and authentic in my hands, yarn that feels alive when I work with it, yarn that sings of its origins. Everytime I hold a skein of yarn, I think of its journey from a field to my hands. I think of the people involved in caring for the animal, the shearers, the gatherers, the sorters, the millworkers, and the colourists. I think of how my hands join so many others in creating a satisfying piece of knitwear. (Being a designer is but a small part of the process - giving the yarn a shape and a purpose - but I love knowing that I play a part on a yarn's journey into other knitters' hands.) Knitting is a fascinating, complex world but we'd be nowhere without yarn.
Look at what my big goof made me for Valentine's. Bonus points if you get the music/album cover reference πŸ˜‚ This year we didn't get each other the same card so there is that.
Today's prompt for both #fiberuarychallenge and #yarnlovechallenge is colour, which is right up my street. Birthday flowers from a dear friend, a new shawl design I'm finishing up in @whistlebare Yeavering Bell 4ply, a hat I recently finished in @debonnaireyarns, and a cake of @thewoolkitchen DK I'm about to cast on. Zingy, beautiful colours to light up my birthday month.
This is forty-three.
I had a bad day yesterday so today had to be better. First, pre-birthday brunch at @singlendcafe_garnethill (where we held our wedding a few weeks ago). Smoked mackerel with beetroot hummous, a poached egg & roasted almonds on sourdough. Then we saw a stunning exhibition at @cca_glasgow by Katherine McBride that combined textile practises with a dismantling of patriarchy and colonialism. Finally, my prize for winning the book quiz at @waterstonesgla with team Here's My Number, Call Me Ishmael. First prize was book tokens and I thought this sounded like a good read (am I the only one who struggles with fiction at the moment?). So, altogether a much better day. Hooray πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›
All the knitwear today. My Purslowe hat in @blackeryarns Cornish Tin II, Karise shawl in @kettleyarnco Baskerville, and Vinterskov jumper in @hjelholtsuldspinderi HΓ₯ndvΓ¦rksgarn. πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›
